What is the Carnaval in Goa?
The Carnaval in Goa, which gets its name from the Portuguese word “Carnaval”, is one of the grandest festivals seen in the state. It is colourful and vibrant, filled with dance, music, food, drink and laughter. It started as a mere street fest but now it has become one of the most popular festivals in Goa, being the only carnival in India!
Tourists from different corners of the world come to Goa during February to witness and participate in this vibrant fest. Some of the best places to reside in during this busy time are Marquis Beach Resort, which is not in the thick of the commotion, but a good distance away perfect to enjoy all the sights. Months before the Carnaval itself, the streets are lined by locals preparing their extravagant floats. You can hear and feel the absolute joy, excitement and laughter in the air.
The Carnaval is meant to be the last hurrah before Ash Wednesday and the first day of the Catholic season of Lent which is a very solemn time. This makes the celebrations even grander than usual, with all the hustle and bustle in the streets, ensuring you have a fun and happening time. At the parade, you can see horse-drawn carriages, beautifully decorated bullock carts and floats adorning the street, with effervescent performers of all ages wearing colourful masks and costumes performing dances of all kinds, sports competitions, short plays, food and drinking.
What Makes the Carnaval So Special?
Carnivals are fun and a sight to see anywhere in the world. But in Goa, the locals take it to a whole new level, brilliantly showcasing the Goan culture with hints of the Portuguese tradition that dates back to the 18th century. The festivities in Goa kick off with the legendary King Momo, who traditionally proclaims the message, “Eat, drink and make merry”. Lucky for you, there is no place merrier for the after-party than at Marquis Beach Resort, where the party never stops. Once you’ve had your fill of the vibrant streets you can take a breather at our beach club, Yazu, and relax in the cool February air.
The Carnaval is primarily a Catholic celebration, but over the years people from all faiths and different parts of the world have come together to celebrate. You can see live performances put up such as dances and songs on the street itself. You can even join in with the fun and visit the many clubs and Carnaval themed parties that take place during this exciting time.
In the state’s capital, Panjim, which is a short 30-minute drive away, the Carnaval is complemented by “Grape Escapade”, a local wine festival, and a famous and widely attended dance at Samba Square in the centrally-located Garden of Garcia da Orta. The streets run rampant with jesters, clowns, acrobats, fire-breathers, singers and dancers. The floats mostly stick to a particular theme depicting Goan tradition, culture or even politics and current affairs.
